Unknowns is a collaboration between choreographer Darcy Lyons and visual artist Ivia Sky Yavelow. Accompanied by a live music score by Jesse Sparhawk playing harp, electric, bass, and pedal steel guitar. Dancers interact with an installation of soft sculptures that represent unknowns in ourselves, others, and the outside world. The sculptures and dancers react to each other, exploring changing relationships to the unknowns- an exploration that asks specific questions about unknowns as well as delving into the unknown as a general concept.

Rest Intervention champions the anti-hustle! Valuing rest as research, we offer a fringe-friendly gathering that invites-but-does-not-demand audience participation. What are your sense memories and strategies for recuperation? What stories and/or practices are conjured for you in recollecting experiences of well being and decompression? Rest Intervention includes a cozy corner, conversation, and opportunities to witness each other to stimulate non-productivity, self-care, and a shared practice of rest. This is a curated moment to rest and restore. Informed by a recent, shared residency at Subcircle, Rest Intervention features performances of seeing and unseeing, rest and its partner restlessness, sensorial tracking, and embodied remembrances by Aura and Christy. Rest Intervention offers a moment to pause and to be with.

About the artists:

Darcy Lyons was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received a B.F.A in dance from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2010 and has since been living, working, performing, and creating dance work in Philadelphia. She has produced the following shows: Proceed with Caution 2019 and 2018, Pendulum 2018, ASKEW 2017, Bricolage 2017, Patchworks 2016, WALLS 2015, and MAEI MAEI AEIM 2013.

Ivia Sky Yavelow is an artist and curator based in central New Jersey. Her works range from small drawings to large installations, and are made with both found and fine art materials. Starting with process based creation and inspired by cycles of creation & destruction, clarity & confusion, her works ask: "What does not knowing look like?". Yavelow graduated from Bard College in 2014 and also studied at the New York Studio School. She has exhibited in the Philadelphia area since 2010.

Aura Fischbeck Dance (since 2008) creates performance events which investigate and communicate the body's intelligence and reflect the complexity of a contemporary human experience. A Philadelphia native, she is currently based in San Francisco. Their work has been presented nationally. Aura recently completed an MFA in dance from the University of the Arts (Philadelphia). She has had the great pleasure to be in conversation and collaboration with Christy Funsch since 2008.

Christy Funsch formed Funsch Dance in 2002 and has since been presented nationally and internationally. She holds an MFA and a Laban Movement Analysis Certification and has taught throughout the U.S. and in Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Vienna. Christy has been mentored by Tere O’Connor, named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch, ” and, in 2019, she was a Fulbright Scholar at Lisbon’s Escola Superior de Dança. She has been in collaborative conversation with Aura Fischbeck since 2008.

About the pieces:

Kandinsky/Motivation/Transition directed by Darcy Lyons

This piece is inspired by a painting by Wassily Kandinsky and will engage with the color, shape, sound, movement, and transition that the painting evokes. Additionally, we’ll explore what motivation moves us from one thing to the next in movement, thinking, and emotionality. We’ll explore what motivation looks like when it comes from the inside and what motivates us from the external world.

known/unknowns

known/unknowns is a collaboration between choreographer Darcy Lyons and visual artist Ivia Sky Yavelow.

The  performance space will be cluttered with many sculptures made by Yavelow. These lightweight soft sculptures are made of dark fabric bundled around unseen contents, appearing similar to rucksacks. Performers will enter and move with the sculptures and their shadows in movements that may include leaning, inspecting, punching, cuddling, rocking, and stacking. Some of the objects crinkle when touched. The performer’s  movements are based on ideas about living with and confronting darkness and unknowns and the sculptures are a visual representation of these unknowns.

About Ivia Sky Yavelow:

Ivia Sky Yavelow earned a BA from Bard College in 2014 and also studied at the New York Studio School.  In 2015 she was awarded a Visual Artist Fellowship from the Edward F. Albee Foundation and completed a residency at their William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center in Montauk, NY.  She currently lives, works, and creates in the tri-state area.

Her process and concept based multi-media works range from installations to freestanding sculptures and works on paper, which she has exhibited since 2010.  Her work has won awards in exhibitions at the New York Studio School and the Trenton City Museum.

In addition to her own studio practice, Yavelow collaborates with other artists and performers and works with art every day as an artist, curator, and teacher. Find out more at iviaskyyavelow.com

Proceed with Caution grapples with personal, social, and global security and trust in the present-day—a time of global violence, the Trump presidency, mass shootings, and the #MeToo movement. A group of performers explore security through dance, video projection, and spoken and recorded words,

Refreshed and expanded after it’s premiere in the 2018 Fringe Festival, the work directed by Darcy Lyons is back to take the stage at one of Philadelphia’s best venues for dance.

Expanded and updated over the past year, Proceed with Caution includes a new twenty minute section about security after 9/11. The central theme of the work comes from security expert Bruce Schneier. He writes: “Security is both a reality and a feeling and they’re not the same thing… The foundation of security is trust, both personal trust and global trust.”

The piece begins to address these questions: How do humans build trust in dance? How do we build trust with each other? How do we build trust in the world at large? How do we address and assess our fears about personal safety? How do our personal feelings of security intersect with global security? How do we make an impact on security through art and activism? With the support of projected video dispersed throughout the piece, the group of performers tell raw stories in their own voices and bodies of their real life experiences of feeling safe, feeling scared, and being truly endangered. The new hour-long version evolves as it moves from the personal to the global, addressing modern issues and how they affect our individual and collective associations and understandings of safety within an increasingly turbulent humanity. Proceed with Caution does not claim to have all the answers, but it’s worth experiencing because the work takes a brave step into exploring one of today’s greatest challenges that everyone can relate to: security.

Directed and produced by Darcy Lyons
Co-choreographed, written and performed by Emma Elsmo, Gabi Montoya, Olivia Naegele, and Sammi Rosenfeld
Previous contributors to the work include Amalia Colon-Nava, Mason Rosenthal, and Carlos Campillo Rubio

Lyons and Tigers presents a reworked version of Heaviness/Lightness, a piece directed by Darcy Lyons and co-created with the dance and percussion duo STB x AT (Sean Thomas-Boyt and Andy Thierauf). In this new experimental work, the performers interact and explore the varying definitions and connotations of lightness and heaviness through movement, live sound, and the interaction with Newton’s Cradle desk toys.

Untitled and Solo- A new solo performance by Zornitsa Stoyanova, that speaks through gesture posture and ever shifting emotional affect. It deconstructs communication and translates, internal and external narratives through the body.

Zornitsa is sometimes abstracted and objectified, but still feels your gaze(judgement) upon her skin. Though she doesn’t speak, she is not yours.  Her body is her language, and you can not possess her. Unashamed, she reclaims her power though the expression of her emotions.

Grate by Amy Lynne Barr tackles the ideals of self perceived greatness, personal history, and life's expectations. A journey into the use of language and how it can impress upon us value, and in turn do exactly the opposite.

Femme, a new work by Courtney Colón, investigates the politics surrounding women’s bodies. Through original movement, sound, and visual installations, Femme explores ideologies surrounding the historical, sociological, and cultural intersections of the contemporary woman’s experience. This work is currently in process and remains perpetually in motion.

Saturday February 17, 2018-  3:30-6:30 PM

or/and

Sunday February 18, 2018-  3:30-6:30 PM

Both workshops will be held at The Iron Factory, 118 Fontain Street, 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19122

Easily accessible via bike or car (street parking on Howard or Mascher Street) or the MFL (blue line) subway.

Lyons and Tigers (Darcy Lyons) seeks all genders of performers for dance theater performances in spring/summer and fall/winter 2018. Interested participants can take one or both workshops, and taking both is recommended. Please read more below, and formally RSVP by emailing darcy@lyonsandtigers.org with the subject line “Audition or Workshop”.

Rehearsals will be 4-8 hours a week. Performances are paid.

**This is listed as an audition or workshop because performers are welcome to take is as a free workshop without the intent of auditioning! You can just come and play and have fun.**

A note from me, Darcy, about auditioning:

Auditioning sometimes isn’t fun, but try not to stress. My aim is to keep it a low key, low stress, fun and creative dancing time. I think it’s important to have auditions and create opportunities in a city that doesn’t host a lot of auditions. It’s important to see and be seen in an ever growing dance community. I see auditioning as a two way street, as in we’re both auditioning each other. Come see if working with me is a commitment you’d like to take on this year. If not, that’s okay too. Don’t let the “a” word discourage you, and do let the “w” word excite you. And the word FREE! Hope to see you there!

With encouragement,

Darcy

If you absolutely cannot make the audition, but are interested, please email Darcy with a video of yourself dancing, and a resume, and 2 or 3 days and times you are available to audition before March 1, and your (rough) weekly rehearsal availability.

Darcy Lyons presents Rx, a new dance theater solo featuring Mary-Carmen Webb embodying the overwhelming, incapacitation that severe panic can cause. The small, intimate audience will witness (up close) one woman’s journey through absolute fear.

Celine McBride & Margot Electra Steinberg explore the role of fight or flight that happens within conversation. Title of work TBD. :)

Noa Schnitzer will present her solo titled The Life Cycle of the Hair-Snail. In this surreal world, transformation is always lurking. As layers overlap and shed, the hair-snail paves its path, growing into its full potential.

On Sunday performances only, Mary-Carmen Webb will present her new duet, tentatively titled Sad Girl Chronicles performed by herself and Lily Kind. She writes:

Unmasked, two women holding faces.
Called pretty things, and
Surprisingly tired of repetitive pick-up lines.
We are not entirely sure you will be entertained.

5 Stages of Grief
Four powerful women move through the Kubler- Ross model of the stages of grief that many people experienced after Donald Trump was elected president. Hate has no home here blends pedestrian, quirky, and virtuosic movements. Throughout, the dancers write and erase words from a large whiteboard used as an interactive, communicative device between the dancers themselves and between the dancers and the audience. This whiteboard references both the potency and easy dismissal of spoken and written language in regards to Trumps campaign and presidency as well as the power of written words on posters used in protests around the world that condemn his hateful behavior and beliefs.
